Looking a better future

In my group are four people: Annie Carpio, Jose Rodriguez, Breiner Rua and myself.

Our project is about teaching English to children. The biggest problem we identified was the lack of language instruction in underprivileged and low-income communities.  Therefore, the objective was to reach out to vulnerable communities and teach English to children, to give them a better future and strengthen an aspect of their basic education.  With this project I wanted to learn how to help other people, mainly children, to improve their level of education.

In the research I found that the Inter-American Dialogue Analysis Center conducted a study of English learning in Latin America, which showed that Colombia is in a category of "low" or "very low" domain, the reasons for these rates may be the diversity of regions, few tools for learning and the lack of teaching in many schools in the country. However, in the research we realized that Colombians would learn English if they had the opportunity to do so in good conditions and with the necessary tools. To decide the age, we based on studies that assure that the children have greater facility to learn a new language. Even native English can be learned if it is taught before the age of 10. Based on this, we chose this project because we know the importance of a second language and its teaching from an early age, besides, it is a way to help the community in a different way.

The plan is to select a disadvantaged community in our city, Barranquilla-Atlántico, this community is from the neighborhood "La Loma", this area has high rates of poverty and the schools are not the best. After selecting the community we decided that the activities we will teach with will be didactic to facilitate learning and that the children will feel comfortable. Through didactics we will facilitate the learning process.

Our solution helps in real world situations because Colombian children need to improve their education and form the basis for a better future, that is, if children are provided with a good level of English according to their age in the future they will be able to expand their knowledge and have more possibilities in their future. Without a doubt the most enjoyable part of the project is sharing my knowledge, seeing smiles on the children's faces as they learn new things. The less pleasant part of the project is going into the communities and seeing the reality of many people in our country, seeing their living conditions and how the governments do not pay the necessary attention to them. I wish I had spent more time helping the children and not only with learning, but going beyond that and helping the community.

On the other hand, the teamwork was good, each one knew what they had to do and how to do it, we had different ideas and we tried to complement them among us, our main difficulty was the dialogue to agree at the moment of making the project and selecting the community. In spite of everything, our project is going according to plan, we would only change the possibility of helping more communities and incorporate new technologies to the reach of this community.
The most important thing about the project is to be able to help. The different ways to help the most disadvantaged is the most important thing I have learned from the project because we do not value what we have and we never see beyond our eyes. This project made me more sensitive to people I don't know but I know they are somewhere with few opportunities to get ahead.

In conclusion in this project we’re going to teach the kids how funny and enjoyable learning English could be, therefore from this experience we expect to raise awarness how important is for our community to promote the education in the new generations in order to achieve the education goal. In addition, we want the reader to be inspired to help their community and for us to live an enriching and satisfying experience by making a difference.

The end.
